Life’s a chore, yes, but what’s missing? I’ve come across many people from different walks of life, but amongst them all, there is a bunch of qualities missing from most people.
1. Awareness - If only people were more aware of things around them. For example, holding the door for the next person behind you, or helping an elderly with his or her bags.
2. Compassion - Why can’t people show more care and concern for others (apart from their loved ones)? If you see someone genuinely working for a living and you appreciate their service, reward them. An extra $ won’t mean a lot to you but it will to them.
3. Sense of urgency - In fact, I would argue that this trait is prevalent in Singapore. Everyone seems to be rushing to their deaths. No joke. HOWEVER, it appears to be for the wrong reasons some time. When driving, let a pedestrian finish crossing the road before turning into it! Or, step out of a crowded lift to let everyone out before going back in!
4. Respect - This is a term which is hard to define. Everyone shows respect in different ways. Myself? I do it the Singaporean way. I call people older than me “Uncle”s & “Auntie”s, only say “Thank You” to them (instead of “Thanks”). Moreover, I respect their jobs, whether is it a taxi driver, road sweeper, CEO, or security guard. They deserve no secondary treatment.
5. Courtesy - People very often forget their “Please”, “May I”, “Thank You”, “Excuse Me” and “Sorry”. Need I say more?
If every did a bit of the above, I’m sure the world will be a better place to live in!
